The philosophy of the annual 1m3 workshop is to create a structure made of 1 cubic meter of material, which is different every year. We took part in “the wooden edition” last summer. The task was to create a structure which will supplement Tokarnia, an open-air museum showcasing villages typical to this region.
First we had a discussion with students to decide what the place needs. We were working outdoors, in a museum, wondering what could possibly enrich this place, whether it should be something practical or abstract.
Eventually we decided to create a hanging structure in a forest next to the village museum. After dark, the forest filled with fireflies - a sight straight from a Disney film. Our team decided to make a large-scale wind chime that would gently sway and make “forest music”. It was also an interactive structure which could be used as a musical instrument that people could play as they like.
